The children couldn't believe their luck and rushed to give the pair high fives, as one little girl asked: "Are you the real Simon Cowell?"

Simon was later seen asking the choir at the start of their audition: "Shall we tell everyone how we met?"

A girl from the choir then explained how Simon and Bruno had jumped out of a box while they were enjoying a party.

Simon added: "It was the best surprise. We heard how good this choir was and said, 'You know what, you are going to be on BGT later today'."

Fellow judge Alesha Dixon said: "Ah, that's great."

But we can now reveal the AmaSing choir had previously tried - and failed - to get in front of the judges.

The group auditioned for BGT four years ago and had been in extensive talks with the producers, but they never appeared on television.

In a Facebook post, shared on the choir's official page, it says there was "lots of debate" with show bosses before they were sent home.

The post from 2020 reads: "Well we brought children from schools in Cheshire, North Wales and Wirral together to audition for BGT Auditions to sing three of our unique songs composed by children and Andy Smith - celebrating diversity and being different.

"We unfortunately after lots of debate from producers didn’t make it this year but we are soooooooo proud of all the fantastic kids who took part."

The AmaSing choir were seen auditioning for Simon, Bruno, Alesha and Amanda Holden on this weekend's episode of Britain's Got Talent.

Viewers were told that the group's choir director, Rachel, had nominated them for a place in front of the judges.

Simon had asked her: "Why did you nominate them for this special surprise?"

She replied: "Because they are amazing.

"We are an art organisation and charity, we work with thousands of kids supporting mental health through the arts.

"I just thought that they deserved something really special and really exciting - and all the children here really love Britain's Got Talent."

The kids wore brightly coloured T-shirts for their audition and performed one of their own songs called Be Who You Want To Be.

Once they had finished, the judges gave them a standing ovation and Simon threw his arms outstretched into the air.

He gushed: "For me, it's the best feeling in the world when you see kids like this owning the stage and doing whatever they want. Because that's what it's all about."

The vote was unanimous and AmaSing were put through to the next round.
