Coronation Street star Cheryl Murray dies aged 71 after 6 years playing Gail Potter’s best friend Suzie Birchall

CORONATION Street star Cheryl Murray has died aged 71.

She played Gail Potter's best friend Suzie Birchall on the cobbles between 1977 and 1979, and again in 1983.

Her character left Weatherfield for the bright lights of London.

Cheryl went on to appear in the music video for Morrissey's hit song Everyday is Like Sunday.

And appeared in the classic Eighties BBC sitcoms Hi-de-Hi! and Sorry!

In 2000, she backed The Sun's campaign to Save the Rovers.

In 2014, Cheryl made a guest appearance on the ITV documentary Gail and Me: 40 years of Gail on Coronation Street.

DEVASTATING DIAGNOSIS

She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and had her first MS attack while working on Coronation Street.

After a spell on fellow ITV soap Emmerdale, Cheryl was forced to retire from acting aged just 46 in 1998 because of the disease.

The actress was born in Liverpool in 1952 and died on September 23 last year.

ITV told The Sun in a statement: "We are saddened to hear of the recent passing of Cheryl Murray, our thoughts are with her family and friends.

"Her vibrant portrayal of Gail's best friend and Elsie Tanner's lodger Suzie Birchall lived on in the memories of Coronation Street fans long after Suzie left the cobbles for the bright lights of London."
