Man Utd vs Southampton LIVE SCORE: Amorim’s men look to claim first Premier League win of year against struggling Saints

  • View from SunSport's Ken Lawrence at Old Trafford

Getting any sort of result from their last two fixtures looked too much for Ruben Amorim’s new United less than a fortnight ago.

Yet they emerged from Anfield with a creditable 2 – 2 draw then left the Emirates in ten-man glory after a dramatic FA Cup shoot – out victory.

Playing against the rock-bottom side in the Prem, one that has scored just 13 goals, has a different type of pressure as boss Amorim stressed.

He wants a repeat of the two high – press, all – heart performances that gave his side – and him – huge boosts. Anything less against Saints and he’s made it plain he won’t be a happy camper at all.

  • Scholes not happy with rumours

Speaking with BT Sport before the game, the former Man Utd midfielder feels the club should be doing all they can to secure Mainoo to a new contract.

Scholes said that the likes of Garnacho and Mainoo should be the future of this team under Amorim.

Mainoo is not happy with the contract on offer and seems to be holding out to consider his options currently.

We're underway at Portman Road but there's been littler in the way of action in this one so far.

The visitors are absolutely dominating possession, with 78% of it in the first 10 minutes but they've not used the ball to create any chances.

We've just had the first shot at goal from the match after a loose pass from Ipswich keeper Christian Walton.

The ball finds it's way to Kaoru Mitoma on the left, but his weak shot is easily scooped up.

  • Maguire out

Harry Maguire has been rested despite a strong performance against Arsenal at the weekend.

Amorim revealed: "Harry is tired and he had a tough week.

"I think Southampton will play without a striker and with more speed in front. Lenny is a quick player and he is a top talent.

"He is ready to cope with the demands of the game."

  • More from Amorim

The Portuguese boss added: "We don't spend a lot of times during games in the last third with the ball - we did it against Nottingham Forest but we need to improve in that part of the game.

"I understand in this moment it is OK to play like that against Liverpool and Arsenal - against Arsenal we waited for the opportunity but in the future you cannot play like that and I know that but we need time to build a different way of playing.

"In the future we are going to focus a lot on that."

  • 'Lacking goals'

Ruben Amorim has spoken ahead of kick off and says his team need to find a way to score more goals.

He said: "The most difficult thing to train in one team is the way you build with the ball and in the final third the way you create situations.

"That is what a big team should do very well and for that we also need time to train. We have had for a long time a lack of goals."
