Resurgent India skittle South Africa for 55, their lowest Test total in 92 years
South Africa recorded their lowest Test total in 92 years as they were blown away for just 55 by a resurgent India in Cape Town.
The Proteas completed an accomplished victory over the world’s No 1 side at Centurion last week but imploded dramatically on the first morning of the second Test at Newlands. Mohammed Siraj did most of the damage with figures of six for 15, with two wickets apiece for Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar.
South Africa’s stand-in captain Dean Elgar won the toss and opted to bat first, only to watch a horror show unfold over the course of just 23.2 overs. Elgar, making his final appearance before retirement, had been the cornerstone of his side’s victory in the Boxing Day Test with a resolute hundred. Here, he was one of eight players dismissed in single figures with wicketkeeper Kyle Verreyne (15) and David Bedingham (12) the only ones to creep past 10. Their score was the eighth lowest in their history but their worst effort since 1932, when they made 45 against Australia.
Kumar only had 2.2 overs to bowl on his recall to the side, but still managed to pick up two scalps and did not concede a run.
India’s innings began after lunch and they took the lead in just 10 overs, Rohit Sharma taking the attack to the home seamers despite losing partner Yashavi Jaiswal for a duck to Kagiso Rabada.
