Bilal Rehman, an interior pro from the US, has revealed that painting over your cabinets is never a good idea.

Not only this, but he claimed that peel and stick tiles in a kitchen are not cute, as well as the sofa mistake that many homeowners are guilty of.

Sharing his top tips on social media, Bilal said: “Three things making your home look cheap as f**k, from your favourite interior designer.”

First of all, Bilal explained why you should never push your furniture against your walls.

He explained that this is making your space “feel much smaller”, as he advised: “Instead, float your pieces in your space - it creates a way better flow and seems like a more intentional space.”

Next up, Bilal got candid on kitchen cabinets, as he continued: “Landlord special cabinets - it all started with the 2000s nightmare of the honey glossy oak cabinets and then somehow we all got over it and decided that we were designers and we were not gonna replace the cabinets, but instead paint them, any shade, every shade, every sheen, not taking into account the profile of the cabinets or the style.”

The interior expert claimed that now it has got to the point where people have “painted on so many different layers of paint”, that are all, in his opinion, “equally as ugly”.

He revealed that such thick layers of paint will not only make it hard to shut your cabinets, but are also not a good look either.

Finally, Bilal revealed why he would “avoid” peel and stick tiles on countertops “at all costs.”

He shared: “I understand that every now and then we need a renter friendly hack, but this is never the way to go.

Interior Designer Reveals Controversial Ikea Trend

“I've never seen these done correctly, not even one time, and all it takes is one hot pan to be lifted from the stove and placed on your countertop and then all of a sudden, you're about to kiss your apartment goodbye.”

Trends interior designers hate

IF you want to ensure that your home looks glam, here are the trends that interior designers can't stand.

NO YELLOW: According to Bilal Rehman, yellow paint in a bedroom is a big no no.

He said: “If you want everyone to know you're a horse girl then yellow is perfect for you.”

SIGN OFF: Kelly Hoppen shared her honest thoughts on Live, Love, Laugh signs.

The interior pro explained: “Another gripe of mine - Live, Laugh, Love - those kinds of wooden things that sit on book shelves and floating shelves, that’s so 10, 12, 15 years ago.”

NO GREY YAY: Julie Provenzano explained that grey interiors have been overdone.

She stressed: “We took a good thing and we overdid it to the point that it now feels copy, paste, basic.”

SOCIAL MEDIA USERS REACT

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @bilalrehmanstudio, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly gone viral and has since racked up a jaw-dropping two million views in just one day.

But social media users were stunned at Bilal’s advice and many claimed that their homes aren’t big enough to follow his tips.

One person said: “Happy for you that you have the space to do that. I couldn't move in my apartment if I put the furniture in the middle of the rooms.”

Another added: “I’m too poor for his tips.”

A third commented: “Most people’s living rooms are too small to put furniture anywhere but the wall.”
