‘They make your home look cheap’ interior designer slams common living room decision that kills the vibe in your pad

FROM paint colour to furniture, there's a whole load of different factors to consider when renovating your home.

And while everybody will have their own individual tastes when it comes to decorating, Camilla Lesser, an interior design expert at Essential Living, has warned of five trends that she thinks everyone should avoid in their home.

Why? Because she warns they'll place your place look "cheap."

Clutter

Camilla says that whilst furniture is wonderful for tying a room together and giving it that cosy, welcoming feel, it's important not to go "too overboard" trying to cram too many items into a room.

“No matter if you’re styling a small or large room, too much furniture will make your space feel cluttered and messy," she warns.

"If you’re wanting your home to avoid looking cheap, opt for bigger furnishing rather than having small, unnecessary items."

Lighting

According to the interior design whizz, lighting is crucial for setting the "vibe and ambience" in a home.

However, she points out that the wrong lighting can make a room "look cheap."

Short curtains can look unfinished and cheap, which is opposite to the vibe you want in your home

Sharing her expert advice and top tips, she explains: “You’ll want to avoid switching on the ‘big light’ as this is usually quite harsh and can disrupt the ambience of the room.

"Also, avoid having poorly lit spaces where the light is too dim."

Instead, she recommends layering a few different lighting types such as accent lighting, floor lamps and table lamps - adding that this will help to create multiple focal points.

Colour scheme

Camilla goes on to point out that having lots of different colours that clash with one another is a "recipe for disaster."

She continues: "Uncoordinated colours will disrupt the whole atmosphere of your home and make your space look cheaper."

To avoid this, the interior design whizz recommends homeowners stick to neutral colours or one colour that’s used throughout the home.

"Using limited colours will make your home look more expensive and luxurious," she says.

"You can still add some hints of colour throughout your home, but make sure it doesn’t clash or feel too disjointed with the rest of the colour scheme."

Badly hung curtains

Camilla says that while it may seem like such a small matter, it's essential to pay attention to your curtains - especially in your living room.

“Curtains add character and depth to a room, so it’s important to opt for long, floor length curtains in comparison to short ones," she explains.

The wrong sized rug

And last but not least, Camilla says: “Choosing the right rug is essential, but choosing the wrong one can make your home look less organised and cheap."

She advises making sure you purchase an appropriately sized rug for the size of your room and opt for one that typically fills a lot of space.

“The best way to go about this is by selecting an oversized rug that is slightly larger than the furniture, so large furniture items such as a couch or table can completely fit on it," she notes.

"It can help to measure the size of the room to ensure you’re not getting a rug that’s too small.”

Trends interior designers hate

IF you want to ensure that your home looks glam, here are the trends that interior designers can't stand.

NO YELLOW: According to Bilal Rehman, yellow paint in a bedroom is a big no no.

He said: “If you want everyone to know you're a horse girl then yellow is perfect for you.”

SIGN OFF: Kelly Hoppen shared her honest thoughts on Live, Love, Laugh signs.

The interior pro explained: “Another gripe of mine - Live, Laugh, Love - those kinds of wooden things that sit on book shelves and floating shelves, that’s so 10, 12, 15 years ago.”

NO GREY YAY: Julie Provenzano explained that grey interiors have been overdone.

She stressed: “We took a good thing and we overdid it to the point that it now feels copy, paste, basic.”
