Car collector ‘very sad’ after selling Ferrari for record £42million at auction & reveals he would ‘drive it to work’

A CAR collector is "very sad" after selling his Ferrari for a record £42million at auction - revealing he used to "drive it to work".

Jim Jaeger put his 1962 Ferrari 330LM/250GTO up for sale at Sotheby's in New York last month.

It sold for $51.7million, smashing the record for the most expensive Ferrari and second-most expensive car of any kind ever sold at public auction.

Ferrari superfan Jim told Top Speed: "I'm very sad. It’s an incredible car, but it’s time for someone else to enjoy it.

"I didn’t buy it as an investment, expecting it to appreciate. I bought it because I’m a Ferrari guy and I wanted to enjoy it.

"When I first got it, I used to drive it to work on nice days. I raced it a few times and really fell in love with it."

The Ferrari fell short of becoming the most expensive car ever sold at auction.

That title belongs to a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, which went for a whopping $142million (£112million) last year.

Another Ferrari GTO reportedly changed hands privately for $78million (£61million) in 2018, making it the most expensive classic Ferrari ever sold.

Jim's Ferrari actually undershot Sotheby's guide price of around $60million (£47million).

Its claim to fame is that it was the only 1962 GTO ever raced by Scuderia Ferrari.

The motor took second place at the Nürburgring 1000 Kilometres that year.

Jim said: "You have to drive a GTO to truly know how wonderful they are.

"They’re so much more than just one of the most beautiful cars ever created."
