A wave of nostalgia is driving up the price of perfume favourites from the 90s

And even older rare perfume bottles are selling for thousands of pounds at auction.

It's the latest wave of 90s nostalgia after toys, clothes and other popular culture items from the decade have jumped in value.

Just one whiff of a scent you used when you were younger can take you back.

However, many of the most popular fragrances at the time are no longer available.

Anyone wanting to be transported back through smell has little choice but to buy secondhand - and the demand is pushing up prices.

"Perfumes get discontinued because of changes in fashion and taste. This adds an air of exclusivity to fragrances no longer available - scarcity makes them more valuable to own," says perfumer and vintage scent collector Sarah McCartney.

"There is a new wave of interest from nostalgic fans wanting to buy the aromas they remember when growing up. It is creating a surge in demand for perfumes from the 1990s."

Early bottles of Chanel No5 will sell for thousands today

Launched in 1921, you can still buy a bottle of Chanel No 5 today more than 100 years later.

The design of the bottle is thought to have been inspired by a whisky decanter but it was changed to a more chunky squarer shape in 1924.

The glass on the first bottles were too thin and would often break.

However, earlier versions of the bottle and fragrance can now fetch thousands.

And Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers sold an empty 1921 bottle of the original design for a staggering £13,000 earlier this year.

Are dupes worth it?

THE Sun asked an independent perfume expert to carry out blind smell tests of popular perfumes and their high street “dupes” to see if the budget versions lived up to the originals.

Noemie Maury is a senior fragrance evaluator who has worked with major fine fragrance and toiletries brands for over a decade.

"High street chains can create perfumes cheaply by buying them from big fragrance manufacturers which grow their own ingredients in-house," says Noemie.

"Because they use oils from flowers they grow themselves instead of importing ingredients, they save on costs and can create fragrances for high street brands at a discount price."

It means they can lack the depth and complexity of more expensive brands which use a wide variety of more expensive ingredients.
