Thousands urgently evacuated from busy buildings after ‘gas leak’ with warning to avoid area

THOUSANDS have been urgently evacuated from busy buildings following a suspected gas leak.

Emergency services have rushed to Southwark Street, central London, where a large cordon is in place.

Around 2,000 people have been evacuated from "several buildings" with residents and workers urged to avoid the area.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: "We remain at the scene of a suspected gas leak in Southwark Street, by the junction of Great Suffolk Street.

"Around 2,000 people have been evacuated from buildings as a precaution with no injuries reported.

"Traffic is very heavy and people are advised to keep avoiding the area."

An earlier statement added: "A cordon and road closure is in place and several buildings have been evacuated as a precaution."

The evacuation is causing heavy traffic issues in the area, with local bus routes having been diverted.
