The Catholic Church is not worried about popularity
Catholics can argue about the appropriateness of Rome’s recent declaration on blessings for same-sex couples and a range of other issues, but Mr. Von Drehle was off base when he asserted that the church should be catching up to modern culture and popular beliefs, as if this is the road to “credibility” and truth. One thing the God of the Old and New testaments is clear on is that prevailing culture is typically diametrically opposed to the will of the divine. Popularity tests have not and never will be the basis for Catholic teachings. Thank goodness.
