Girl, 2, dies after suffering ‘serious head injury’ at home as cops launch probe

A TODDLER has died days after suffering "serious" head injuries at home on Easter Monday, police have said.

Northumbria cops said they received a "report of concern" for the two-year-old in Houghton-le-Spring on April 21.

The girl was taken to hospital but died on Thursday.

A force spokesperson said an investigation is "at a very early stage", with enquiries ongoing "to establish the full circumstances surrounding the girl's death".

They said: "Shortly after 11pm on Monday (April 21), we received a report of concern for a child in the Houghton-le-Spring area.

"A two-year-old girl was taken to hospital for treatment of serious head injuries and tragically died on Thursday.

"Her next of kin are being supported by specially-trained officers at this time.

"The investigation is at a very early stage, and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the girl's death.
