F1 Spanish Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Race on NOW – Piastri leading Norris as McLaren eye another 1-2 finish – updates

  • Lap 57/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

There is a yellow flag out as Antonelli goes off the tack.

This could change the whole race as the safety car is out.

Red Bull are waiting for Verstappen to use the carnage to pit and keep his spot.

He comes back out on hard tyres which surprises everyone, including the driver, who asks the question 'why the **** are we on hard tyres?'

  • Lap 55/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Almost some massive drama as Bearman and Lawson battle it out, not knowing that Norris and Verstappen were coming up on them.

It causes Norris to lose half a second as a result and Verstappen almost goes into the back of the McLaren.

Piastri is the real winner of that drama for sure.

  • Lap 53/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Piastri heads into the pits and comes back out 3.4 seconds ahead of Norris in second spot.

Verstappen clocks another fastest lap and is hot on the heels of the McLaren in front of him.

This could be an interesting end to the race in Spain between the front three.

However, the Red Bull driver gets on the team radio and reports 'this car is completely broken'.

'Okay Max' is the reply from his team.

  • Lap 51/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

As Verstappen comes back onto the track, his teammate Tsunoda causes him to lose some time, poor communication there.

Norris headed into the pits and comes back out ahead of the Red Bull with both cars on the soft tyres.

Piastri has a 28 second gap on his McLaren teammate in second but will come into the pits imminently.

  • Lap 49/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Russell has come out of the pits on a brand new set of soft tyres.

Hamilton is given the 'box, box' order from his team.

He returns to the track in seventh, ahead of Hadjar, but a long way behind Russell.

That stop did not work at all for Ferrari.

  • Lap 47/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Verstappen logs the fastest lap of the day.

He is now four seconds behind Norris in second spot.

Piastri has an identical gap on his teammate.

  • Lap 45/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Hadjar is having another good drive for Racing Bull.

He is amongst the points and is a real rising star in F1.

Hulkenberg is behind him in ninth place but there is a massive 10.2 seconds between the pair.

  • Lap 43/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Leclerc heads into the pits, going onto a brand new set of medium tyres.

That could be pivotal with all the other cars going onto used medium compounds.

However, he seems to far back at this stage to put pressure on the front runners.

  • Lap 41/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

It seems impossible for Verstappen to manage these tyres for the rest of the race considering how hard he is pushing it.

If he has a third stop, a McLaren one/two seems inevitable.

Leclerc is in fourth, with Hamilton in fifth spot.

  • Lap 39/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Norris is right on the tail of Piastri now.

He also has a five second lead on Verstappen in third place.

Both of the McLaren's will have to do one more stop, whether they let him through remains to be seen.

That is gambling on the premise that Red Bull are going to stop again.

  • Lap 37/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Red Bull need to make some decisions right now.

If they are planning a two-stop strategy, Verstappen needs to stop going so hard.

He overtakes Leclerc to move into third, Norris can no doubt see him in his rear view mirror.

  • Lap 35/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Verstappen is looking to take it to Leclerc as he registers the quickest lap of the day so far.

He reports some issues with the clutch when shifting on the team radio.

The Red Bull is now out on mediums, hoping to eliminate the need for another stop in this race.

  • Lap 33/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Hamilton is the latest driver on the team radio reporting that he has no grip whatsoever on his rear tyres.

As a result, Leclerc is now 12 seconds ahead of his teammate.

He is now in third spot, with Verstappen in fourth after that pit stop.

  • Lap 31/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

The McLaren's are starting to put the pressure on the Red Bull now.

They know his tyres are degrading and see their chance.

However, Verstappen heads into the pits to prevent them from having to take him on.

  • Lap 29/66 – Verstappen leads, Norris second

Of the front eight cars, only Verstappen is on soft tyres now.

All of the rest are now on the medium compounds.

Most of those drivers will be looking for a two-stop strategy but the Red Bull of Verstappen may have to take an extra one due to those soft tyres.

  • Lap 27/66 – Verstappen leads, Norris second

Alonso goes past Albon as parts of his front wing come off onto the track.

It looks as though he is going to have to pit to get his third front wing of this race, crazy scenes.

Williams are not having a day to remember in Spain.

  • Lap 25/66 – Verstappen leads, Norris second

All change as Verstappen uses his warmer tyres to get ahead of Piastri.

It could just be a temporary win for Red Bull as that early pit stop by Verstappen means he will have to come in again soon.

You would expect that he is going to have to opt for a three pit strategy today.

As things stand, everything is looking good for McLaren.

  • Lap 23/66 – Piastri leads, Verstappen second

Norris pits and comes back out in front of the Ferraris.

Piastri then heads in, looking to get out in the same place.

A good pit stop sees the Australian come back out ahead of Verstappen, good tactics from McLaren.

  • Lap 21/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Verstappen puts in the quickest lap of the day as he overtakes Russell to move into third spot.

Alonso has made a move on Sainz to move into seventeenth spot.

How the mighty have fallen, last season that move would have seen him move into a podium spot no doubt.

  • Lap 19/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

With the heat in Spain, we have never seen a race where tyre management may decide a driver's fate.

Russell has now moved into third, with Verstappen in fourth.

The Ferraris have pitted and gone onto the medium tyres.

  • Lap 17/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Verstappen heads into the pits for a much-needed tyre change.

Leclerc now switches places with Hamilton.

He is in third place now with Verstappen coming back out onto the track in eighth place.

  • Lap 15/66 – Piastri leads, Norris second

Norris takes over Verstappen on the straight and the Red Bull does not even try to defend the move.

He realises it is futile with his tyres having degraded rapidly with his start to this race.

It offers Norris the chance to try and close the gap on his teammate, which is crucial if he is to have any hope of winning this race.

  • Lap 13/66 – Piastri leads, Verstappen second

Norris has closed the gap on Verstappen and is now right on his tail.

Piastri is leading the way and has no pressure on him currently.

Verstappen is telling his team on the radio that he is finding his tyres have no grip at all.

  • Lap 11/66 – Piastri leads, Verstappen second

Leclerc tries to take on Hamilton but cannot get passed him.

He is a second quicker per lap than his teammate, you would think it would make sense for them to swap positions.

Sometimes egos can come ahead of team tactics but the team are now telling Hamilton to allow Leclerc through.

  • Lap 9/66 – Piastri leads, Verstappen second

The two Ferraris are in fourth and fifth, while the two Mercedes are in sixth and seventh.

This offers the option for them to really drive as a team today.

Not good news for the cars following them.
