We sold our house, quit our jobs & live full time in our self converted box truck… now we get to travel the world
A COUPLE who sold their house and quit their jobs to live full time in a self-converted box truck are now set to travel the world.
Ollie and Nemi 's story started with a builder's van that they decided to turn into a home.
The couple, who had no previous experience of building a van, set about transforming it into a home. They then christened the vehicle the Vandercamp.
Ollie had 18 years experience as an electrical engineer so he had the skills to kit out the van with all mod cons.
After the couple realised a baby was on the way, Ollie had the motivation he needed to get the van ready for the road as soon as possible.
Ollie said: "So we had a van for around five years which we used to go travelling. But then we got pregnant so we realised we are going to need a bigger van to accommodate the baby."
Nemi said that when they were working on the bigger van while she was pregnant both their parents urged her to rest because of her condition.
Nemi said: "But I said to them I can't rest because I have no home. I have nothing to put my feet up on."
Nemi revealed that the couple used to live in a normal terraced house and both go out to work. But Nemi said the couple "never saw each other.
"We thought this is stupid. We are spending all our time at work to pay for a house that we are never in."
Ollie said: "I think we just thought this is rubbish lets do something else."
Ollie explained how the Ford Transit might look like a regular van, but it was actually very different to the standard vehicle you see on the road.
He explained how the 3.5 ton van had a gas tank, waste tank and water tank underneath. This was essential if the family wanted to be able to live inside it.
The solar panels on top provided a source of power, and the couple kept two bikes on a rack at the back of the vehicle.
Ollie explained how they could park up, jump on the bikes and cycle to the nearest shop.
Nemi said that the process of throwing things out of their old home was tough and there were tears at the time.
But she added: "But the you realised its just stuff. And stuff is not important. Time is important."
Ollie explained that after packing in his old job the couple had set up a new digital company which allowed them to earn money while living out their nomadic lifestyle.
Ollie urged others to consider jumping out of the proverbial rat race and living their lives in a van.
He said: "The hardest part is making the jump. Once you have done that you are in it then."
Nemi said: "Don't expect your new life to be Instagram perfect. There will be days when you are parked up in a rainy car park. "
