Twilight of the Warriors delivers knockout as Hong Kong’s most watched film ever

A spokeswoman for the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association Limited said that the disparity between viewership and box office sales could be due to the different cinema pricing strategies.

The Hong Kong Box Office Limited revealed on Tuesday that overall box office sales in the city for the first half of the year – including both local and international films – stood at HK$640 million, a 17.08 per cent drop from the same period last year.

Local films that performed well in the city for the first half of the year included The Moon Thieves at third place, We 12 in fourth, and Rob and Roll in fifth, with box office revenue ranging between HK$21 million and HK$27 million, according to data.

Currently, the highest-grossing non-Hong Kong film in the city’s market is Dune: Part Two at HK$36 million as of June 30, followed by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Spy × Family Code: White, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, which features Hong Kong’s notorious Kowloon Walled City, had previously made a splash at the Cannes Film Festival after its screening won a standing ovation.
