But fan tears quickly overtook feelings of joy as it signalled the end for one leading show star.

During the current eighth series, ITV fans have seen Will Davenport, played by Tom Brittney, endure a variety of different struggles.

His mental health has been in sharp decline with fans left concerned for the character as he went missing during last week's episode.

Having been involved in an almost-fatal motorbike crash, he has been using pills as a way of self-medication to cope with the incident.

Concern grew when a note was found from Will which heartbreakingly read "everything will be better now I'm gone".

He was later seen brawling outside of a pub and found himself spending a night locked up for his involvement in the fight.

Following an eye-opening encounter with a young boy named Jacob, Will soon decided to get his life back in check as he finally made a return to the village just in time for the birth of his son.

He ditched the drugs for good as he returned to his job as a vicar and later performed the baptism for his own son in a sweet moment.

Having found a way out of his dark time, Grantchester fans were left thrilled for Will and the positive outcome.

Raving about the show online, one penned:  "Great ending to tonight's episode & series 8 of #Grantchester."

As another quickly added: "That was such a lovely last episode for them all. Felt like early #Grantchester. A whole lot of heart and warmth."

A third said: "Oh darn I'm bawling. What an episode."

But their joy soon turned to sadness as they realised they were closer than ever to Will's permanent exit from the show.

Next series will see the character depart the show forever with former Hollyoaks star Rishi Nair.

Remarking about the impending exit, one person said: "We have Will for a bit longer so that's something. Don't think I'll ever be prepared for his exit at this point."

Before someone else said: "I really really don't want @tombrittney to leave. He's everything to #Grantchester (plus don't let it be a bad ending for Will). I need him to stay now he's happy."
