Trump military parade set for Washington, while protests are planned around US
For the first time in more than three decades, the United States is holding a major military parade in the nation’s capital on Saturday – fulfilling a long-standing desire of US President Donald Trump and echoing displays more typically seen in countries like China, France and Russia.
Showcasing the nation’s political divisions, though, the display in Washington will come on the same day as mass protests across the US.
The South China Morning Post will run a live blog covering the parade and protests around the US starting at 5:30pm Saturday local time, 5:30am Hong Kong time.
Some of the backlash to the parade has focused on its resemblance to displays in authoritarian nations, at a time when the Trump administration has been criticised for displaying increasingly authoritarian tendencies.
