A MOTHER and a her child have been killed by an avalanche on a ski trip in Finland.
The pair was found dead buried in snow in the Pyhakuru Valley near Sweden on Thursday.
The mum, who has not been named, was reportedly heading for a local hotel after spending a few days on a ski hike with her son, the regional Police reported.
Temperatures in the area fell shortly, going upto -20 degrees, accompanied with strong winds.
Cops said they began a rescue search operation on Tuesday after receiving an emergency alarm at around 2pm.
Lapland rescue services chief Harri Paldanius said the woman told emergency responders that wind had blown away their skis and ski poles - and that "it was really cold and getting dark."
The woman reportedly stopped using her phone in order to save the battery.
However, cops said they could not reach her phone when they tried to call her, even though it was ringing.
Rescue operators said the weather conditions got so bad, they "don't recall experiencing something like this before."
