Michael is survived by his wife Marina Karella and their daughters Princess Alexandra and Princess Olga.

The prince was born in Rome months before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.

His parents were Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark and his wife Princess Francoise d'Orleans of France.

Michael's father died when he was just one year old and the Second World War scattered the Greek royal family across Europe.

He was raised by Princess Francoise in Morocco, Spain and France before she died in 1953 - leaving him an orphan aged 14.

Michael returned to Greece for military service, later selling his mother's country estate in France.

He became a historian, writing bestsellers about Greece and European royalty.

Michael was also a contributor to the American magazine Architectural Digest.

The prince married artist and sculptor Marina Karella at the Royal Palace in Athens in 1965.

He renounced his rights to the Greek throne to marry Marina, the daughter of a common-born industrialist.
