Mothering Sunday is marked this weekend.
It originates from the Middle Ages when a custom developed of allowing people who had moved away from home to head back and visit their 'mother' church, as well as their actual mums, on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
Although it's often called Mother's Day in the UK, it has no connection with the US version of Mother's Day.

Now the occasion is used to shower hard-working mums with affection and presents.
