We tested all the products that will help you nail that slicked-back hairstyle
AFTER months of trying, I’ve finally nailed the slicked-back hairstyle, and have tried every type of oil, wax and gel there is to get that polished finish.
Here’s the ones that actually work . . .
Budget
Got2b Glued Blasting Freeze hairspray, £5.50 for 300ml, boots.com: Lionesses Alessia Russo and Ella Toone said they swore by this hairspray to keep their hair in place for games.
If it can last 90 minutes on a football pitch, then it would keep my locks in place all day.
Turns out the England aces knew what they were talking about – once you spray it on your hair, it is not moving for love nor money.
But it is not so handy when you are still trying to perfect it, so I use it alongside a wax to seal my style in place.

I can use it with all sorts of styles too, not just slick back ’dos.
Mid-range
Mermade hair styling wax stick, £12 for 75g, mermadehair.co.uk: I used this on a whim after it landed on my desk and I needed to touch up my hair during the day – and I couldn’t not take it home with me that night.
It’s the easiest wax I’ve used – the stick means you don’t have to get your hands dirty and you can apply it exactly where you need it.
I love that you don’t have to use loads of product to get the slick-back finish, and it doesn’t seep into hair in the same way gel, creams or oils do.
I also find it works better than hairspray for keeping fine, baby hairs down.
It tugs slightly, but not enough to destroy the slick finish, and you can layer it for extra hold. If I could only pick one, it would be this!
Luxury
Olaplex No7 Bonding Oil, £28 for 30ml, uk.olaplex.com: There’s a reason the slick-back style is known as the “Olaplex bun” on TikTok – using the repairing product to hold the ’do without damaging hair has become just as popular as the look itself.
And it’s great for anyone with dry, damaged or brittle hair.
Out of the full range of products, I find the oil to provide the most hold and a little goes a really long way.
Granted, you have to wash your hair at the end of the day or you will end up with an oil-stained pillow, and it’s not so great for people with greasy hair.
Pick of the week
AS we are crawling to the end of the hardest month, there is nothing like a beauty bargain to get you all excited again.
Next’s The Beauty Lovers Box, £22 worth £120, and The Men’s Must-Haves Box, £20 worth £103, are an absolute steal.
