  • Prem agrees new betting guidelines

THE Premier League and FA are among those to have signed up to fresh guidelines on betting sponsorship, writes TOM BARCLAY.

English football’s leading authorities are joined by the EFL and the Women’s Super League in agreeing to adopt a new code of conduct for gambling-related agreements in the game.

Its aim is to ensure that gambling sponsorships are delivered in a socially responsible way by being designed to limit the reach to children and those at risk of betting-related harm.

Grassroots are set to benefit from the code which claims that commercial cash raised from gambling sponsorship must be reinvested back into infrastructure and programmes that serve football fans and communities.

In recent years, high-profile players such as England star Ivan Toney and Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali have been banned for breaking rules that prevent players from betting on matches.

In 2023, Premier League clubs collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ matchday shirts from the end of the 2025-26 season.
