Iran crash live updates: No signs of life where President Raisi’s helicopter crashed, state media says

Raisi was elected president in 2021, widely seen as the choice of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after a career in Iran’s judiciary. He has overseen a tightening of morality laws, violent crackdowns on anti-government protests and Iran’s first direct attack on Israel.

The crash site was found after Turkish state media said that a Turkish drone identified a heat source that could be the missing helicopter.

President Biden has been briefed on the situation, a White House spokesperson said. The State Department said it was following reports closely.
