Bayern Munich vs Lazio betting preview

One win in five isn’t very Bayern Munich but that’s the run the German champions come into this game on.

They now sit 10 points off the pace in the Bundesliga, while they head into the second leg of this tie trailing 1-0 following defeat in Rome three weeks ago.

To be fair, Bayern played pretty well that night and certainly created enough chances to have taken something from it.

However, they didn’t and now the pressure is on and it’s only increased since that first leg due to their poor domestic run.

They will have to turn things around with centre-back Dayot Upamecano – sent off in the Stadio Olimpico – and it’s the defensive area which is the biggest concern.

Bayern are without a clean sheet in seven matches so even though they look full of goals, you wonder if a side with a striker as clinical as Ciro Immobile will be able to fend them off simply be ensuring they score at the other end.

The good news for Bayern is that their home form has largely held up.

Their recent poor run has seen them play four of five games away. The home match was won and it’s now 11 victories in their last 13 at home.

That should give Thomas Tuchel’s side plenty of hope, although the prices about them progressing still look rather short.

They are 4/11 to make the quarter-finals and odds-on to win by two clear goals in 90 minutes.

With confidence low, those don’t appeal and I think it’s worth siding with the Italians at 2/1 to progress to the last eight for the first time in their history.

Bayern Munich vs Lazio key stats

  • Ciro Immobile has nine goals in 12 Champions League appearances for Lazio, while Bayern’s Harry Kane has 15 goals in 19 UCL games in his career.
  • The Italians have never gone past the last-16 stage of the Champions League. Their last appearance in it (2020/21) saw them beaten by Bayern.
  • Bayern have progressed from 11 of their last 12 Champions League last-16 ties. However, this is the first time since 2012 that they go into the second leg behind. On that occasion they trailed Basel 1-0 but thrashed the Swiss 7-0 in the home leg.
  • Dayot Upamecano is suspended for this game having been sent off in the first leg. However, Matthijs de Ligt returns after a domestic ban. Sacha Boey and Noussair Mazraoui are among those out injured, but it is hoped Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry will be declared fit.
  • For Lazio, Juventus loanee Nicolo Rovella and Petric are set to miss out.

Joshua Kimmich anytime assist

Kimmich – six assists from a defensive-midfield position this season - has switched back to his old right-back slot in recent games and that will offer him plenty of opportunity to push forward and deliver crosses into the box.

With Harry Kane in the middle, there’s every chance Kimmich is able to create some good goalscoring chances, particularly given Bayern will need to be on the front foot given the state of the tie.

An assist beckons.

Alessio Romagnoli to be carded

Only Lens have collected more cards in this season’s Champions League than Lazio, who have received 22 in seven games so far.

With a lead to hold onto, this could be a match which sees the dark arts come to the fore, while it’s clear Bayern will look to attack and cause problems for the visitors’ defence.

That will bring Alessio Romagnoli into play in this market. He’s been carded in seven of 27 appearances this season, including four of his last eight.

Up against the likes of Harry Kane here and with a decent referee in charge - Slavko Vincic has shown 4+ cards in 30 of his last 48 UEFA club appointments – 11/4 looks a decent price.

Lazio to qualify

One win in five, including defeat in the first leg of this tie, means there will be a nervy atmosphere in the Allianz on Tuesday and don’t be surprised if the home players look a little rattled too.

Bayern still have goals in them but the problem of late has been keeping them out with no clean sheet in seven. Concede here and they need three.

At the prices, Lazio look worth a try.
