Stop a common mistake that can thin out your hair – it seems healthy but leads to breakage and patchy hair loss
VITAMINS and minerals alongside a good diet can improve your overall health but overuse could have some negative effects.
When an excessive dosage of certain supplements is taken, it can sometimeslead to hair thinning, breakage, and patchy loss.
Elithair hair surgeon Dr. Balwi shared thoughts on what may lead to excessive shedding caused by overusing certain vitamins and supplements, also known as telogen effluvium.
SELENIUM
"Selenium is a common ingredient in hair growth supplements, while also a fantastic mineral for thyroid health and your immune system," the medical expert said.
However, when taken in high quantities, it could have the opposite effect.
Overuse creates extra antioxidant enzymes that can cause the body to attack its cells, including those in the scalp, leading to breakage and patchy hair loss.
Dr. Balwin also said that additional symptoms of selenium toxicity include nausea, vomiting, nail brittleness, and discoloration.
VITAMIN E
Vitamin E is commonly known as a skincare staple and for strengthening your immune system.
"The recommended dose of Vitamin E is 15mg per day for both men and women, and it can be found in a variety of different foods including seeds, nuts, and plant oils," Dr. Balwi explained.
"Taken in excess, research suggests that this could lead to hair loss, despite being a great addition to your diet for skin and brain function."
ZINC
According to the doctor, zinc is often recommended for those already suffering from their follicles falling out, so it is a great mineral for improving immune function and cell growth.
He emphasized the importance of having a constant nutritious supply of zinc because your body can't produce it.
"When taken in excess this mineral can have adverse effects and cause you to lose hair instead, so it’s important to find the right balance," Dr. Balwi explained.
VITAMIN A
Dr. Balwi called Vitamin A a "fantastic" mineral for promoting healthy organ function, vision, and bone health.
Be mindful of how much you're consuming because it's found in many leafy greens like spinach and kale as well as yellow fruits.
Though it has a lot of benefits, he warned that over-supplementation of vitamin A could cause your hair to fall out, on top of vomiting, dizziness, and blurred vision.
