A SAVVY mum has revealed that she saved a whopping £4,000 by renovating her bathroom herself.
Emily Barratt, 39, revealed that she was able to give the room a luxury feel, while spending less than £300 on the makeover.
The mum of three, from Lancashire shared that she laid the flooring, repainted the tiles, bath panel, radiator and cupboards, wallpapered and spray painted the walls all by herself.
Emily, her husband and their three children George (6 months), Minnie (10) and Rory (9) moved in to a seven bedroom property in September, 2023, and she decided to renovate it as a passion project.
The family moved in to the property when Emily was 38 weeks pregnant, and the house was a shell, with no heating, hot water, of kitchen.
The mum told Media Drum World: “I painted the tiles rather than replacing them, saving costs.

“I wanted a frosted window so I used frosted glass spray paint rather than replace it.
“I also painted the existing bathroom cupboard and bath panel. I just had to trim the bath panel to fit on top of the new floor.
“I do all my own basic DIY such as joinery, decorating, floor and tile laying.
Emily's bathroom renovation cost breakdown
Wallpaper = £140, on a discount in sale at the Graham and Brown factory shop.
Floor = £80 (Order extra to be used in the utility too)
Spray paint for the windows = £10
Charity shop mirror = £5
Pictures from the charity shop = £2
Reused shelf = £0
Tile and cupboard paint = £0 (Gifted - but this would have cost £44)
Total = £281
“In the past I have spent on average £5K to replace a bathroom and so I wanted to do it for less.
“The hardest part was the wallpapering as the ceilings are not an average height so they are difficult to reach when you can’t set the ladders out with a bath etc in the way.
“The bathroom took me around two weeks, as I had to keep stopping and starting to tend to my new baby.
“My friends and family love the new bathroom, but my favourite part is actually the charity shop purchases I made because I think they add so much character for such little expense.”
Emily has shared her renovation journey online, and shared some of the comments she has received about the project.
She said: “The best comment I have had was that “hard work pays off”.
“Now and again I get negative comments, someone said they would have kept the tiles the bright green colour, but I think everyone is entitled to their own design choice, if we all had the same tastes life would be very boring.
“People are mostly friendly, unless they are trolling.”
