But international picture agencies Reuters, AP and AFP have all issued "mandatory kill" warnings for the family photo.

Royal fans spotted that eight-year-old Charlotte's hand does not line up with her red jumper sleeve in the picture.

Editing photos for public release is standard practice.

In its "kill notice", AP said: "At closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image."

Posting on Twitter, Piers Morgan said: "If, as this astounding AP kill notice claims, the Palace manipulated that Kate photo to quash all the wild conspiracy theories about her, then they’ll have just made things 100x worse."

The photograph marks the first time the princess has spoken out publicly since her surgery.

It is also the first picture shared of the royal since she underwent her "planned" major abdominal op in January.

Devoted husband Prince William took the family photo at Windsor earlier this week.

Kate captioned the snap: "Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months.

"Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. C"
