Redditor Shejellybean68 dished the details on the situation in a post on the social media platform.

She said her older brother and his wife are expecting a baby in one month.

The 26-year-old said her entire family except for the expectant parents are against the name.

She added that her own family has standard names compared to the one chosen for her nephew.

WHAT'S THE NAME

She asked for assistance in navigating the odd naming situation using the popular forum.

"A few days ago, [my brother and his wife] gathered my family around to tell them the name they selected — Earlgay."

She maintained that she had no idea where the name actually came from.

"I don’t think it’s a reference to anything. It sounds like Earl Grey tea, but I asked my brother and he said they don’t drink tea," she said.

"Our younger sister asked his wife — our sister-in-law — if the name Earl was a family name on her side, and the answer is no.

"We were all left confused and speechless.

"My very conflict-avoidant dad even told them, 'You are making a gigantic mistake if you go through with this.'"

She expressed that the name is asking for bullies to taunt her nephew.

"It just doesn’t make any f**king sense," she said.

I named my baby after a wild dog - people openly torment me & the hospital nurses laughed, it really suits her

"If you like the name Earl, it’s a bit old fashioned at this point but whatever. Why add '-gay' to it?

"Even beyond the low-hanging fruit that offers playground bullies, it literally doesn’t seem to have a point.

"It isn’t a tribute to anyone, it isn’t a maiden name in our families, we are just stone-cold puzzled."

REDDIT REACTION

Several Redditors chimed in to give their thoughts on the unusual name.

"Sounds like pig Latin, instead of 'girl,' it’s 'Earlgay,' one wrote. "I hope they don’t do this"

"Are you sure they aren’t trolling you? Because it would be a pretty good troll," another added.

"Pig Latin for 'girl,'" one more added.
