While many are loving the show, others are frustrated with it and feel that axing a number of characters could breath new life into it.

On a soap forum, one Coronation Street fan wrote: "It's become an absolute chore to watch. There's about 15 characters that should be axed and you wouldn't miss them.

"The stories are farcical and have no basis in any sort of reality and the acting is certainly questionable with many of the so-called 'actors'."

In reply, another fan listed a whole host of characters who they wouldn't miss and added: "That's just the start. The cast seems large... some characters you simply don't see for months.

"I know that they can't all be involved in a major storyline at any one time.. but for some go disappear for ages is weird."

A fellow soap fan commented: "It's the worst it's been, to the point where I don't watch for weeks on end."

Meanwhile another moaned: "Corrie is definitely in the worst state it’s ever been in. The show needs to have a big clear out of deadwood."

However, other fans leapt to the show's defence, citing the amount of episodes it had to produce as a reason for why some weeks or storylines aren't as exciting as others.

One wrote: "Soaps always have these peaks and troughs, more so now for the ITV soaps due to budget restraints and time of the year.

"These episodes would've been filmed late Nov to early Dec and usually standards slip around this time as they rush the scripts out ahead of Xmas holidays."

They continued: "When you factor it all in and the churn of 6 episodes a week, it's literally impossible to deliver high quality content on a regular basis.

"Should it be doing better? Of course, but then people on a soap form are going to be ultra critical compared to your average casual viewer.

"It's watchable though, and in this era of free to air TV and what it's got to compete with, I think it does as well as can be expected under the current circumstances."

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
