From boilersuits to skirts, why everyone is going wild for denim – and how you can shop the trend

IN the ever-evolving world of fashion, there is one fabric that has stood the test of time: denim.

From its humble beginning as workwear for miners to its modern status as a symbol of effortless style and sophistication, denim has transcended generations and has now solidified its place as a timeless classic.

Beyonce's latest single, Texas Hold 'Em, has reignited our love affair with all things cowboy and inspired a resurgence of yee-haw fits - think fringed jackets, cowboy boots and, above all else, a whole lot of double denim.

The timeless fabric may never go out of style, but the high street has recently upped its game, with eye-catching new washes and surprising silhouettes.

Here's how the Fabulous Fashion team are incorporating this fresh denim dynamic (without going full-on cowgirl!).

I love a denim shirt, especially when it's a little oversized.

They’re so versatile and this one for Albray is one of my favourite finds ever.

Its thick denim makes it feel structured enough to wear buttoned up as a shirt on its own, or layered with a tank underneath to act as a jacket.

But, it can also be worn with a bigger blazer on top. It's such an all-rounder, value for money item.

I'll be wearing it with black jeans to tick the double denim trend box, plus some good comfy boots.

I am also so in love with this bag from Mango. It's a dupe of the Dragon Diffusion one, saving you a whopping £250.

I’ve been loving denim skirts for a few years now, and this season is no exception.

However, the denim skirt has had a little upgrade for 2024.

Instead of being pencil-skirt like, now fishtail and A-line styles have taken over - and I am very much here for it.

This one from New Look is not only a great price, but the slit at the front adds an extra element - and also means you can move easily.

I’ve paired the skirt with an oversized collared blouse from H&M and a gilet over the top from Albaray to create the perfect spring look.

And with the western trend having such a big moment this season, I’ve hopped on board and added a pair of cowboy boots and suede buckle belt.

Denim will always be my first fashion love. It had my heart from the first time I tried on a pair of American Vintage Levi 501s in Flip on the King’s Road way back in the Eighties.

So, if I could pick one thing that I had to wear for the rest of my life, it would be denim. The versatile fabric can be switched up from dime-store vintage to a million-dollar look in seconds!

Dress it up or dress it down, but denim never dates. I love the fact that you can make thrift-store denim pieces look couture by changing up accessories.

Or you can make this Next denim boilersuit feel workwear-ready by adding a smart checked trench like this Arket one, and a pair of ballet flats.

When it comes to timeless staples, my spring wardrobe just wouldn’t be complete without a denim jacket.

I love this time of the year, as it means I can finally ditch the big coat and bring out a lighter-weight jacket - a denim one will never goes out of fashion and will last you a lifetime.

This collarless jacket from Aligne really caught my eye. The boxy shape and buttoned detailing is a nod to the ‘French girl’ boucle jackets that are trending right now, but is much cooler.

I’ve paired it with a Breton stripe tee, some beige floaty trousers and a pair of Birkenstock Bostons (these are sure to be a hit again this spring, so get them before they sell out for the season) for an effortless, casual look that’s perfect for the weekend.

If you’re looking for something a little more fashion-forward, the cinched-waist belted jacket from H&M (below) would look great for the office with some trousers and slingbacks.

Or if you’re a traditional Levi’s lover, opt for the original trucker jacket - complete with Levi’s red labels.
