M1 CLOSED after multi-car crash causing delays of more than an hour & queues for miles

A MAJOR motorway has been closed after a multi-vehicle crash causing delays of more than an hour.

Lanes have been closed on the M1 southbound between junction nine for Harpenden and junction eight for Hemel Hempstead.

National Highways said lane three of the inter-urban motorway in Hertfordshire has since reopened.

It added that there were seven miles of congestion and about 70 minutes of delays.

The government agency also said it was now clearing the carriageways and carrying out recovery of the vehicles.

A post on X read: "#M1 southbound between J9 (Dunstable) and J8 (Hemel Hempstead) - Congestion."
