Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Sander Berge EXCLUSIVE, United ‘eye’ Youssouf Fofana deal, Matthijs De Ligt latest – updates

  • Ten Hag press conference

Manchester United fans will get to find out even more about what to expect in the coming hours.

United boss Erik ten Hag is sitting down in front of the press ahead of Saturday's Community Shield clash.

The Dutchman is scheduled to begin his press conference at 4:30pm to preview the heavyweight curtain raiser.

  • Community Shield injury doubts

Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are injury doubts for the Red Devils' curtain raiser against Man City on Saturday.

The Manchester rivals are facing off under the Wembley arch, three months on from United's surprise FA Cup final victory.

But according to reports, they'll have to do it without Maguire and Lindelof.

The pair were understood to be missing from training at Carrington yesterday.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who looks set for an exit this summer, was also said to be missing from the sessions by the Manchester Evening News.

As things stand, United only have two fit senior centre-backs in Jonny Evans and Lisandro Martinez.

Erik ten Hag already lost new signing Leny Yoro to injury during a pre-season friendly with Arsenal.

  • Saha's Maguire verdict

Manchester United icon Louis Saha has claimed that Harry Maguire should head for the exit doors if United sign Matthijs de Ligt.

Speaking to CSDB.gg, he said: "A fresh start will be the best for Harry Maguire

"With Harry Maguire, we know his situation and it hasn’t been easy, sometimes a fresh start is what players need and it could be the best for everybody in this situation.

"He can be important in both boxes but De Ligt can play that role also.

"De Ligt is a confident player and a leader in his own right, but he has struggled to maintain his form in the years since leaving Ajax.

"Having said that, I think the Premier League is a good fit for him and it will provide him that extra motivation to get back to his very best.

"There is also the surprise element of having him come from abroad so strikers might not know how to play against him."

  • De Gea 'very close' to Fiorentina move

Former Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea is reportedly closing in on a move to Italian club Fiorentina.

According to Spanish outlet Relevo, Fiorentina have been working on a deal for "several weeks" and all parties are now "very close" to an agreement.

It's also claimed that negotiations are "well advanced".

De Gea, 33, hasn't played professional football since he left Man Utd in 2023 following the arrival of Andre Onana from Ajax.

  • Mazraoui and De Ligt update

Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Manchester United's pursuit of Bayern Munich duo Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt.

Rumours had suggested that the Red Devils could be eyeing a move for Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries, but Romano has claimed those whispers are wide of the mark.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: "There will be more for Manchester United, because they keep working and keeping contacts active for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

“Despite all the stories on Dumfries, the top priority for Manchester United remains Mazraoui, because he can also play on the left, and because it's a player already well known by Erik ten Hag.”

  • Back to business

Manchester United's stars are back at Carrington as they prepare for this weekend's Community Shield.

Alejandro Garnacho and Lisandro Martinez have returned to the squad after their extended break following Copa America success with Argentina this summer.

  • United's transfer clue

Manchester United fans have spotted a major clue that Sofyan Amrabat will return to Old Trafford next season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has denied the option to buy the midfielder who joined on a deadline day loan deal from Serie A side Fiorentina last summer.

But eagle-eyed fans have noticed that Amrabat is still featured on the 'squad' page on United's official website - despite his loan deal ending 39 days ago.

There is even with a photo of the 27-year-old wearing the new home kit with a quote saying: "I will put everything into every action I take for the team."

  • Van Nistelrooy's Rashford plan

Erik ten Hag has revealed that he has "no doubt" that new coach Ruud van Nistelrooy can get Marcus Rashford back to his best this season.

I have no doubt. I have strong belief in the person. I have strong belief in his skills to help our team score goals but also to help our team, working as a team, and that mean we are attacking as an XI.

  • Pre-season review

Manchester United's pre-season has come to a close with their season proper getting underway on Saturday.

The Red Devils begin their new campaign with the curtain raising Community Shield against rivals Man City at Wembley.

    • Arsenal 2-1 Man Utd (L)
    • Man Utd 3-2 Real Betis (W)
    • Man Utd 0-3 Liverpool (L)
  • West Ham ditch Wan-Bissaka

West Ham are turning their attention away from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Hammers had been hoping to sign the right-back with Man Utd putting a relatively low asking price on the defender.

But according to The Telegraph, it's not possible for the Irons to agree a deal for Wan-Bissaka and as a result the club are turning their attention elsewhere.

It's reported that Newcastle and England star Kieran Trippier is among the possible options for Julen Lopetegui's side.

  • Man Utd Prem fixtures

Here's how Manchester United's Premier League schedule looks:

  • Man Utd 'still targeting' Toney

Manchester United continue to keep tabs on Brentford star Ivan Toney.

According to Forbes, United remain hopeful they will land Toney during the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils want another striker after losing Rasmus Hojlund to injury.

However, Toney may cost up to £40million while the Bees will not be keen to lowering their demands after losing new centre-forward Igor Thiago to injury.

  • How to watch the Community Shield

Manchester United vs Manchester City will be broadcast LIVE on ITV 1 in the UK.

Coverage is expected to start at 2:15pm BST - 45 minutes before kick-off.

Fans can stream the entire action via ITV X on any compatible mobile device or tablet.

Alternatively, SunSport will have minute-by-minute coverage through our blog including build-up and post-match reaction.

  • Community Shield team news

Manchester United face rivals Manchester City on Saturday in the Community Shield at Wembley.

United manager Erik ten Hag will be delighted to welcome Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo back to the camp after their Euro 2024 final heartbreak with England against Spain

However, the Red Devils will be without Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro who both picked up long-term injuries, while Tyrell Malacia is not scheduled to be back until October.

City boss Pep Guardiola, though, would be without Ederson due to some "niggles" and Rico Lewis who was forced off during the Chelsea pre-season victory.

Rodri, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and John Stones are also likely to be unavailable and there will be no Julian Alvarez who is joining Atletico Madrid but Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne are set to return.

  • Man Utd escape PSR breach

Manchester United chiefs will avoid a financial rap after claiming £40million of Covid-related losses.

Football finance expert Stefan Borson had told talkSPORT only “relatively exceptional” allowances would prevent United breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.

This was for the period that ended last season and Borson said their £40m Covid claim for 2021-22 was way bigger than their rivals.

He warned without that leeway, and being allowed to omit the £35m costs of Ineos’ deal to buy into the club, the Red Devils would break the £105m limit for losses over a three-year period.

But SunSport understands they were not the only club to claim big Covid losses, even after the pandemic ended, to avoid a PSR breach.

  • More on Old Trafford plans

Manchester United may be forced to scale back plans for a new 100,000-seater stadium due to a lack of government funding.

United chiefs recently made the decision to build a new, state of the art ground rather than redevelop Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are also looking to completely regenerate the area of Trafford where the ground will stand.

However, those plans may be put in jeopardy if the Manchester giants do not receive government funding.

According to City A.M., government money will be required to pull off the most ambitious of several proposals that are being put forward by the club.

But United are unlikely to get a handout following the recent discovery of a £20billion hole in the nation's public finances.

  • Man Utd friendlies

Manchester United have played more far-flung friendlies than any European club in recent memory.

Football clubs have often been panned for flying halfway across the world to cash in on lucrative exhibitions over the summer.

United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are among those to have played in the USA during this close-season, while Tottenham have been to Japan and South Korea.

And according to new data from the renowned International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES), no club has played more friendlies outside of Europe between July 2010 and May 2024 than the Red Devils’ 52,

Neighbours Manchester City are next on the list with 45 - the same number as reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid.

League-wide, the Premier League set a new record in 2023-24 with an aggregate total of 42 ‘non-European’ friendlies played - cumulatively clocking up a whopping 191,514 miles in the process.

  • Ivan Toney advice

England legend John Barnes insists Brentford star Ivan Toney isn’t the answer to Manchester United’s issues.

    Barnes told bonuscodebets.co.uk:

I don’t think signing a striker is the solution to the issues at Manchester United. I think it’s more of an issue for Arsenal who need a presence in the penalty area in terms of the way they play.

The problem with United is that [Andre] Onana is overworked which is to do with their shape when they haven’t got the ball. Having the energy and the willingness to work back. I don’t think United need a striker.

They’ve got [Rasmus] Hojlund who is young and has shown some promise last season. Toney is a good player but he won’t solve their issues.

  • Scott McTominay advice

Manchester United legend Gordon Strachan has urged Scott McTominay to leave Old Trafford this summer.

    Strachan told topoffshorecasinos.com:

Scott is a hard-working, committed player. He’s been linked with an exit for the last few seasons, but his application and desire has never been found wanting. He has fought for his place at the club. There has been a lot of talk about his ability, and he was identified as a player that could be upgraded, but when Manchester United needed a big moment last season, he would often provide it.

If he's enjoying what he's doing at Man United, if he's enjoying playing a squad role, then I think he should stay at the club. He’s one of the first names on the Scotland team sheet, so he doesn’t need to worry about his Manchester United game time affecting his international career.

If it was me, at this stage, I would want to go and play football every single week. I would want to go and prove that I’m a top player in the Premier League. He’s had some great times at Manchester United, and it’s a hard club to leave, but I think he should be playing week-in, week-out at his age.

    Gordon Strachan
  • Old Trafford plans

Manchester United plan to keep their current Old Trafford home in some form when they move to a new stadium.

United are to move to a new £2billion, 100,000-capacity stadium on land adjacent to the current ground.

The plan is to have the new football stadium ready by 2030.

However, the Red Devils so not intend to demolishing Old Trafford completely but instead scaling it down to a 30,000-seater venue.

It can then be used for the women’s team as well as academy matches.

That would mean the history remains with statues, the Munich clock and memorial plaque all most likely staying in their current positions.

  • Martin Zubimendi transfer war

Liverpool are keen on signing Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi this summer.

Zubimendi, who has previously been linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester United, has been named as a top target for the Reds.

However, the potential deal is understood to be difficult with the 25-year-old's release clause having to be paid in full.

The midfielder is believed to have a £51.7million buyout in his Sociedad contract, a hefty fee to cover in one.

Another stumbling block for the Merseysiders could be convincing the Spain international to make the switch to the Premier League.

According to The Athletic, other suitors such as the Gunners and Barcelona have failed to convince Zubimendi to jump ship.

  • De Ligt & Mazraoui blow

Bayern Munich are refusing to budge over Manchester United targets Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui.

Bayern want £64million for the two defenders but United have only offered £51m.

The Red Devils' chiefs thrashed out personal terms with De Ligt weeks ago.

And Mazraoui is also thought to have agreed a five-year deal — both with options of a further year.

  • Youssouf Fofana hijack

Manchester United are "ready to hijack" AC Milan's move for Monaco star Youssouf Fofana.

Fofana has been open to moving to Milan this summer, but the Serie A giants are struggling to meet his team's transfer demands.

It's thought that Monaco would demand around £30million for the midfielder.

West Ham have also showed an interest, but the France international does not want to move to the London Stadium.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, the 25-year-old that Fofana is Milan's first choice to bolster their midfield.

However, there are now fears Fofana will join United instead.

  • Sander Berge latest

Burnley will demand up to £30million for Sander Berge, who is targeted by Manchester United as an alternative to Paris Saint-Germain star Manuel Ugarte.

United are already understood to have made contact with Berge’s representatives.

And the Clarets, following relegation from the Premier League, would be willing to sell the 26-year-old.

SunSport understands the Red Devils would be prepared to pay £20m for the midfielder signed for £12m from Sheffield United a year ago.

Burnley, though, would hold out for £10m more for the Norway international.

The Championship outfit are under no pressure to sell given that they have a £100m parachute payment to rely on.

  • Community Shield team news

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be delighted to welcome Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo back to the camp after their Euro 2024 final heartbreak with England.

However, the Red Devils will be without Rasmus Hojlund and Leny Yoro who both picked up long-term injuries.

While Tyrell Malacia is not scheduled to be back until October having not kicked a ball since May 2023 due to two rounds of knee surgery.

Elsewhere, Pep Guardiola would be without Ederson due to some "niggles" and Rico Lewis who was forced off in the Chelsea victory.

Rodri, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and John Stones are also likely to be unavailable.

And there will be no Julian Alvarez who is on the verge of signing for Atletico Madrid.

However, Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne are set to return.
