Both Corrie and EastEnders were scrapped twice this week, on consecutive days, as the broadcasters opted to air the football competition.

Now Coronation Street fans and famous viewers alike have taken to X to roast ITV.

One ranted: "I can’t remember it ever being so consistently inconsistent."

Another added: "We’ve not had a regular week of #corrie since the fourth week of January."

Corrie's famous fan Tony Blackburn, a hit Radio 2 DJ, then wrote: "This is now beyond a joke for all us Coronation Street fans.

"More football this evening on BBC and ITV which means no Corrie.

"Why can’t they put football on other channels and leave us Coronation Street fans alone or put Coronation street on say ITV2 we will follow it anywhere!!!"

This prompted a fan account to reply: "Absolutely! Can ITV please take one of its flagship shows seriously, please?"

Fred Elliott’s best Corrie moments

Butcher Fred Elliott spent 12 years on Coronation Street and quickly became a fan-favourite with his booming voice and habit of saying everything twice and here are his most memorable moments...

  • 1997- Fred married Maureen Holdsowrth but the marriage didn’t last with Sheree Hewson’s Maureen leaving him after just a week.
  • 1999 - Fred let slip that his nephew Ashley was actually his biologically son from a one night stand with an old employee.
  • 2001 - Fred bought the Rovers Return for barmaid wife Eve Sykes but it quickly emerged that she was a bigamist leaving him alone again.
  • 2004 - Unlucky in love Fred fell for Penny King until she had her head turned by Mike Baldwin
  • 2004 - Heartbroken Fred thought he’d found love with Thai bride Orchid. Until he learned that it was all a scam and she was actually a stallholder from Levenshume Market called Stacy Hilton.
  • 2006 - Selling the Rovers to retire to the country with Bev Unwin, Fred spent the morning of his wedding telling Audrey Roberts that he loved Bev. Before leaving her house he suffered a massive stroke, leaving Bev devastated at the altar.

Corrie actor Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy Mayhew, replied: "This has made my night! I grew up listening to you.

"I love it that you love us."

While Corrie and EastEnders, as well as ITV soap Emmerdale aired in their usual slots on Monday, the rest of the week has been turned on its head.

On Wednesday, Emmerdale was moved to 7pm so the broadcaster could air the Liverpool vs Southampton clash.

The Anfield side triumphed in a convincing 3-0 win - yet this will have been of little consolation to soap fans.

Coronation Street was cancelled entirely, with its Wednesday episode now airing tonight, Thursday, instead.

It will follow an hour-long Emmerdale at 7pm on ITV, while rival soap EastEnders will return to BBC One at 7.30pm.
