But the Tesco self-service checkout is arguably one of the most unusual places anyone has ever popped the question.

However, Tesco employee Michael Ward decided it would be the perfect place to ask girlfriend Sandra a very important question.

A video of the moment started circulating online, showing Michael taking Sandra by surprise when he got down on one knee as she was scanning through her shopping.

Sandra was speechless for several seconds before Michael pointed out to the crowd of onlookers: "She still hasn't said yes, by the way!"

The comment broke Sandra out of her stunned silence, and she said: "Yes! Of course, of course! Oh my god, oh my god!"

Michael then stood up before they embraced.

People were quick to comment on the video, with many pointing out that there was a shopper scanning through her purchases in the background as Michael proposed.

When she finished and got her receipt, she had to stand to the side to let the proposal play out - before making a swift exit as the pair hugged.

"Why is nobody mentioning the woman in the back continuing to bag her shopping then waiting so they move to leave?" one wrote.

"The real star of the show," another added.

"Absolutely hammering the aul shopping into the bag!"

As others poked fun at the proposal itself, with many using Tesco puns in their comments.

"Did he use his Clubcard to get the ring?" one wrote.

"Unexpected item in bagging area," another said.

"Of allll places tescooss??? Brooo whyy!" a third questioned.

"Can’t imagine anything more romantic than a proposal and a meal deal!" someone else said.

"Out of all the places, a self check out area!" another marvelled.

"The wedding is cheaper with a Clubcard so I've heard," someone else joked.
