My mother-in-law opened our wedding gifts and pocketed cash – she proudly admitted it, I was shocked into silence

A WEDDING went awry as a sticky-fingered mother-in-law decided to keep gifts and cash for herself.

Crooked as can be, she fervently admitted that she took the money from the newlyweds.

Redditor Negotiationflaky6846 recounted the debacle in a post on the social media platform.

She said that she sat down to open the gifts and cards, thinking they had gone through them all.

That is when the sneaky mother-in-law came through with another "pile" of goods the guests brought.

She told the bride and groom that she planned on taking the cash from the cards she kept to pay the videographer, and the groom complied.

COLD FEET

The bride said that the incident came as a curveball, worsened by her new husband's apathy towards the situation.

"I was quite shocked about this as first of all we didn't even want a videographer, my mother-in-law had been convinced by her sister to hire one last minute," she said.

She added that the cash in the envelopes was for a bigger endeavor.

"We had asked everyone for money for our honeymoon and in those cards was just over the cost of the videographer," she said.

PIN DROP

Several Redditors asked why the bride stayed complacent at the blatant disrespect at her own wedding.

"I’d be beyond mad if my husband was fine with this," one said.

"Even without personal details, it’s insane your mother-in-law thought it was appropriate to read notes addressed to you. Equally or even more insane that your husband agrees."

The bride shared her reasoning behind staying silent.

"People keep saying why didn't your fiancé stick up for you but I just was so shocked I didn't know what to say so I didn't say anything," she said.

"He didn't know I was upset until we had a massive argument as soon as we left."

She added that a mix of an awkward moment and her generally calm temperament caused her to stay quiet.

"I'm not a massively assertive person and it was hard to do in the moment," she said.

The cash wasn't the only grab the mother-in-law went for, she even went for decor.

"One thing that made me even more upset was there were some flowers on her kitchen table and she casually said, 'Oh someone gave these to you as well.

"'I was thinking well why are they not on my kitchen table.'

"I haven't even had a chance to wear it yet."
