Two men arrested after woman killed in crash involving car fleeing police in London
Two men have been arrested after a fatal collision involving a car that was driving away from police.
The Metropolitan police said the vehicle hit a pedestrian at about 2.10pm on Tuesday in Edgware, north-west London.
The force previously said the car had been driving away from a police vehicle prior to the collision and did not stop.
A woman in her 60s died at the scene despite emergency services’ efforts and her family are being supported by specially trained officers.
The vehicle was later found abandoned nearby, the Met said.
Two men, aged 18 and 19, were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop. They remain in police custody.
A spokesperson for the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said: “We have begun an investigation into the involvement of the Met police (MPS) in a fatal road traffic incident in Colindale yesterday.”
They added that a woman was confirmed dead at the scene “after she was hit by a car being pursued by police in Grahame Park Way”.
“After we were notified by the MPS, we sent our investigators to the police post-incident procedure and to the scene to begin gathering evidence,” they said. “We declared an independent investigation shortly after 4.30pm on Tuesday and our inquiries are still at a very early stage.”
Detectives from the Met’s serious collision investigation unit are investigating the incident and appealing for witnesses.
“They are keen to hear from anyone who saw the incident or anyone leaving the car in Franco Avenue, including road users who have camera footage, to get in contact,” the force said.
Anyone with information on the collision is asked to call 101 or message MetCC on X and quote CAD4440/25Mar.
