We needed extra cash so turned our garage into a tiny home – it’s an easy way to make money by renting it out
A COUPLE have revealed how they decided to find a way to earn extra cash, and turned their garage into a tiny home.
Savvy Caroline McQuistin shared how she and her partner needed some money to fix their roof so got creative on a “very low budget”.
On her @carolinemcquistin, the homeowner showed the DIY project from start to finish.
She explained: “We turned our garage into a tiny home on an incredibly tight budget.”
Caroline shared how they hadn’t really done anything with the garage space when they had moved in, but they had thought it had the potential to be its own “contained space.”
However, things changed when their home started leaking.

Caroline said: “On a very rainy Skye summer’s day, water started pouring in through our living room ceiling.
“And we decided it was time to kick our butt into gear and get this little project on the go.
“This is how we are going to bankroll the new roof on our house.”
Caroline and her partner got to work and did most of the DIY process themselves, and spent a total of around £5,000.
She said they did have help from professionals such as a joiner to do the walls.
The project wasn’t all plain sailing as it had no plumbing at the start of the work and Caroline had to get her hands dirty.
She said: “There was no plumbing in this building so for about three months of our lives, every single weekend we were out in the garden digging a trench.”
Forget forking out for a pricey kitchen, the bargain hunter found some secondhand units for just £25 and installed them herself and painted them a chic yellow colour.
The kitchen worktops were left over from their own home’s project, which helped to save them money.
The couple also decorated the house themselves and did their own bathroom tiles.
Caroline added: “We first put a shovel in the ground to start digging the trench on the 12th February and by the 1st of June the project was complete.
“The space is only 2.4m wide by 5.5m long so the biggest challenge but probably the part I enjoyed most was figuring out how to maximise the space.
“We had to apply for a change of use to change it from being a garage to a living space and also we are still in the process of getting our short term let licence so we can rent it out.”
Caroline called it her “proudest achievement”, and her video has racked up over 17,000 likes.
