I was a bridesmaid at a wedding with a last-minute ‘change of groom’ – I found out that day, it was just the first twist

A BRIDESMAID has recounted a sudden change in plans for the matrimonial ceremony she was apart of.

She said that guests were shocked to learn of a last-minute "change of groom" during the wedding.

Redditor Certainperformance56 detailed the debacle in a post on the social media platform.

She said that while the incident happened many years ago, she felt compelled to tell the story.

At the time she was in her 20s and her group of seven friends became inseperable.

The clique included "Sarah" and "John," a couple whose name she changed for privacy reasons.

"Six months after graduation, we got together for a Christmas lunch and Sarah told us that she had a new job, got engaged and they were looking to buy a house," the Redditor said.

"She said John was very excited about it and we needed to get ready for their wedding in March and of course we were all going to be bridesmaids.

"We were all so happy as they were going to be the first one of all our friends to get married."

WHERE DID IT GO WRONG?

The Redditor said that after months of waiting, she heard nothing from the bride about what to wear or any details about the wedding itself.

She added that she had not even received an invitation to the affair.

"Three weeks before the wedding, the maid of honor sent me a message that I should buy a lilac dress," she said.

"They sent me photos of what they expected me to buy and that there was not going to be a bachelorette party as they didn't want to spend money on it.

"I got the address and time for the church and the party."

Once there, the bridesmaid realized something was off when the maid of honor said they needed to look after the groom's family, who didn't know anyone at the ceremony.

"Then she told me the groom's name was not John, but Michael, 23," she said.

DAMAGE CONTROL

The bridesmaid said she maid a point to introduce herself to the groom, noticing that the new groom was very different from John.

"I introduced myself to Michael just 10 minutes before the wedding. He was completely opposite to John in every way," she said.

"I had no idea who he was, or why she was married my friend, who less than three months ago told me she was marrying John.

"All Michael's family was there, super happy, and all Sarah's family and friends we were very serious and silent."

THE REAL DEAL

After getting settled into the party, the maid of honor finally dished on why the old groom was ditched for a new one.

"Sarah met Michael on her knew office job since last August. They were already together when John proposed and start paying for the house," she said.

"Sarah canceled the engagement in the end of January when she found out she was pregnant with Michael's baby."

The marriage ended up lasting, with the pair going on to have five children together.

She later learned that John ended up in a facility for mental health — and that his treatment of Sarah wasn't befitting of a future husband.

"The last I heard, John got very sick with a depression and ended up in a mental institution," she said.

"I also learned many years later that John was not as nice to Sarah as we all thought, and even when he never showed any signs of being abusive, we never knew what happened behind close doors.

"Sarah was thinking of leaving him for a while but I guess after being with him for so many years she felt marrying him as an obligation."
