How to make your home smell like a Jo Malone candle without spending £370 – the scent is as strong if not better too
AN upcycling fanatic has revealed a simple hack that can make your home smell like a Jo Malone candle without spending £370.
Dean Rowland, who previously dated TOWIE’s Harry Derbidge, has a passion for luxury home items and cooking – but also wants to make the most of a product.
After purchasing the Jo Malone candle in the Pomegranate Noir scent for £370, he expected it to “burn like a dream.”
But instead, it lasted “less than a month and burned like an absolute disaster,” prompting him to try making it himself.
Dean shared a video with his 13.3k TikTok followers, and fans have been quick to praise his creative hack.
He began by cleaning out the old jar using “hot water, patience and a little DIY.”

Dean sprayed the inside of the jar, wiped it down, and added more hot water to melt away any leftover residue.
Once the old wax was removed, he didn’t waste it, opting to use it for his burners instead.
And rather than sticking with the original pomegranate scent, he decided to create his own fragrance blend.
Dean wanted the scent to be strong and mixed Myrrh, Tonka, Velvet Rose, and Oud together.
He explained: “Most people know I do like to push boundaries and let's be fair, custom is always better.”
Before adding the wax mixture back into the Jo Malone glass jar, Dean prepared the wicks. Using a hot glue gun, he secured four wicks to the bottom of the jar.
To keep the wicks upright, he crossed two long kebab sticks over the top of the jar and wrapped the tops of the wicks around them.
Next, he melted soy wax and poured it into the jar in sections, alternating between adding wax and fragrances.
He says: “Boom, a luxury candle without a luxury price tag.”
Since sharing the video at the beginning of March, Dean’s creation has gained 414.9k views on TikTok, with 265 people rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts.
One person asked: “What were your costs in making this please?”
Dean replied: “Around £20.”
Another commented: “This is so clever – where did you get the concentrated scents from to add to the wax?”
Dean responded: “My favourite is Velvet Rose & Oud, but Pomegranate is also really nice (I use them in my burners too).”
