Donald Trump storms out of courtroom before being ordered to pay $83.3 million for defaming E. Jean Carroll
DONALD Trump has been ordered to pay $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll for defamatory statements he made against her in 2019.
The decision was made by the jury in a Manhattan courthouse on Friday.
But Trump wasn't present when the verdict was read after he dramatically stormed out of the courthouse in the middle of Carroll's lawyer's closing argument.
“Mr. Trump acted maliciously when he made his two statements," Judge Lewis Kaplan said.
Carroll claimed that Trump raped her in a department store in the '90s and the defamation comments came when he denied it.
The decision comes following a separate 2023 trial that covered sexual assault and defamation statements against Carroll made in 2022.
“He doesn’t care about the law or truth but does care about money and your decision on punitive damages is the only hope that he stops,” Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan said, CNBC reported.
Kaplan added that the only way Trump will "stop" is if has to pay her a "very large" amount of money.
Carroll was seen in a group hug with her lawyers Kaplan and Shawn Crowley.
Trump posted on Truth Social after the verdict was decided.
“Absolutely ridiculous!” Trump said in a post.
“I fully disagree with both verdicts and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party.
“Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a Political Weapon.
"They have taken away all First Amendment Rights.
"THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”
