Five men arrested over historic abuse charges at BBC star Nicky Campbell’s old school
FIVE men accused of historic child abuse at a leading school attended by a BBC star have been arrested and charged.
The suspects, aged between 69 and 90, were nicked over alleged non-recent incidents at Edinburgh Academy.
Another man, aged 74, has been reported to the procurator fiscal.
The alleged abuse is said to have happened at the private day school between 1968 and 1992.
Nicky Campbell, 62, has previously spoken publicly about alleged abuse at Edinburgh Academy.
Earlier this year he gave evidence to the Scottish Child Abuse Enquiry.
The broadcaster claimed he witnessed Iain Wares abusing his classmates.
The ex-teacher is not one of the men who has been charged.
Mr Campbell, from Edinburgh, said the Wares' alleged abuse was "Savile scale", in reference to the paedophile media personality Jimmy Savile.
The BBC presenter claims he witnessed the teacher sexually abusing pupils but was not targeted by him himself.
Wares, who also worked at Edinburgh's Fettes Academy, currently lives in South Africa and is battling against extradition to Scotland.
Cops thanked those who came forward to help with their enquiries.
Detective Inspector Colin Moffat said: “We would like to thank everyone who has come forward and assisted our enquiries to date.
“While the investigation of child abuse, particularly non-recent offences, can be complex and challenging, anyone who reports this type of crime can be assured that we will listen and we will investigate all reports, no matter when those offences occurred or who committed them.
“If you have suffered abuse, or you know anyone who may have been the victim of child abuse then please call Police Scotland on 101.”
