Gavin and Stacey returning after five years off screens with record-breaking BBC Christmas special
GAVIN and Stacey will return for another Christmas special after five years off air, it has been reported.
The last outing of the beloved British comedy in 2019 was the most-watched show in a decade and was left on a cliffhanger.
Now Deadline has reported that James Corden and Ruth Jones have secretly worked on a brand new episode.
The industry site says filming will begin this summer, with the majority of the main cast likely to return.
Other stars Matthew Horne and Joanna Page in the titular roles along with an ensemble cast including Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb and Julia Davis.
More than 18 million people tuned in to what was thought to be the sitcom’s final outing, which saw Nessa (Jones) propose to loveable Smithy (Corden).

But rumours of a reunion grew after James returned home to the UK after ending his eight-year-long tenure on The Late Late Show in the US.
It is reported that the series is in development/pre-production and will be produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Jones’ Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by Corden.
Gavin and Stacey became a surprise hit when it first launched on the BBC in 2007 and became digital channel BBC Three's then-biggest hit.
Following mammoth ratings for the channel, it was moved to BBC One with the third and final full-length series taking centre stage as a prominent part of BBC One's 2010 New Year programming.
When the show's latest episode ended in 2019, fans were left convinced that another must be in the works as a result of the gripping cliffhanger.
After years of on-off romance and appearing to deny any feelings between one another, Nessa finally made the big move and asked Smithy to marry her.
Viewers were kept in the dark as to whether he said yes or no but it seems like the big question will FINALLY be answered when the new episode makes it to screens.
It is thought that the BBC will be hoping the return of the show at Christmas will see a surge in TV ratings after they failed to replicate the phenomenal success seen by the show in 2019.
