A source said the driver had been trying to stop his car from sliding forward at the car park entrance of the Kowloon City Plaza shopping centre.

“He mistakenly stepped onto the gas pedal, causing the car to dash forward and damage the carpark’s gates and government fences,” the source said.

Police said they received a report in the morning that a driver had crashed onto a pavement in Kowloon City.

The driver, who passed an on-site breath test for alcohol, reported feeling chest pains.
