Tony updated dedicated Coronation Street fans with the good news on his X account.

Writing online, the former Benidorm actor said: “WooHooo!!! That's me (and George) staying on at @itvcorrie till at least July 2025 and I couldn't be happier. As they say...if it ain't broke, don't fix it!”

In response to the post one thrilled fan gushed: “Brilliant news! Love your character. Hope George is there long after 2025! Corrie needs a George. Maybe a George and Eileen? There's a thought!”

Another shared: “I have to say I think your character is one of the best to enter the cobbles in a long, long time and I'm delighted we will be seeing you there for longer.”

A third added: “Great to hear that! And you play a great character too.”

It comes as Corrie has retained other major stars by offering them bumper deals, including Bill Roache, 91, Helen Worth, 73, and Tina O’Brien, 40.

Since joining the ITV soap, George’s storylines have included a romance with long-running character Eileen Grimshaw and discovering he is related to the Platt family.

However, several of Corrie regulars have quit their roles, including Alex Bain (Simon Barlow), Lisa George (Beth Tinker) and Peter Ash (Paul Foreman).

Tony is not the only one to secure his future on the cobbles.

DS Swain actress Vicky Myers has joined Corrie full-time after impressing show bosses in her guest appearances.

Vicky told The Sun Online: "We're only just scratching the surface with Swain.

"When I got the call that this was happening, it was very much that she was the itch that I needed to scratch. I want to know more about her.

"I did my homework initially a couple of years ago and I wanted to build this character that portrays and embodies everything about the North and about Weatherfield, almost in a matriarchal sense.”
