Writing for The Times back in 2008, Clarkson lavished praise on the Mercedes CLS.

He said: "As far as I'm concerned the Mercedes CLS is the most spectacular-looking car Mercedes has made and possibly one of the all-time greats from anywhere.

"Mash your foot onto the brake pedal and, I'm not joking, it really does feel like your face is being torn off.

At the time the Grand Tour host tested one, a couple of years earlier in 2005, the model was retailing for around £70,000.

In today's money that's equivalent to over £120,000.

All that makes it astonishing that you can now pick some up for around £5,000.

One listing on budget site Desperate Seller has a 2006 CLS with 136,000 miles on the clock listed for £4,995.

The ad states that a private number plate is included in the price, while the car comes with all the mod cons, including sat nav, cruise control, a rear parking sensor and automatic lights.
