But the brave mum decided it was either giving up or channeling her pain into "purpose" to make a difference to others.

And thankfully, she chose the latter.

Speaking to GK Barry on her Saving Grace podcast, Safiyya said she tried her very best not to think "why me" when her baby girl died.

"I really tried not to do that," Safiyya admitted. "And that's because I felt so [suicidal] after I lost Azaylia that I thought if I start sitting in 'Why me, why's this, why's this?'... that's why I had to execute my pain and turn my pain into purpose.

"It was going to go two ways. I was either going to take my own life or I needed to execute it into purpose and make changes in the pain I've endured. And that's what I do."

Safiyya went on to explain to GK that there is "no preparation" for someone's child dying, saying: "It feels like you are jumping off a cliff and you've got nothing to hold on it.

"That's the only definition I can give to it."

In 2020, Safiyya and Ashley's daughter Azaylia Diamond Cain was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia at just eight weeks old.

Medics did all they could to save their brave baby, but she tragically passed away in April the following year.

Safiyya told GK that she was so shocked when she heard her baby's diagnosis that she thought she had 'passed away' herself.

"It felt like a nightmare. I thought I'd actually passed away. I felt I'd passed away and I was going to wake up," Safiyya said.

"All I was doing was being a mum to Azaylia to her the whole time. And then I became a nurse further down the line."

Before Azaylia died, the couple raised more than £1.6million to help pay for potentially life-saving treatment in Singapore.

Sadly, she never made it so the couple pledged to give the money to "other children and their families in the same situation as us".

Safiyya and Ashley set up The Azaylia Foundation.

The couple split a year after their daughter died but they continue to raise funds and awareness of childhood cancer for the Foundation.

Safiyya now visits schools and holds 'Wear Orange For Azaylia Days', where the children wear orange and she gives assemblies on kindness, mutual support and inclusivity. The teachers and parents are taught about childhood cancer.

Meanwhile, Ashley has revealed that he is going to be a father again. He and a close friend are expecting a little boy next month.

You're Not Alone

EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide.

It doesn't discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society - from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.

It's the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.

And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.

Yet it's rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.

That is why The Sun launched the You're Not Alone campaign.

The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.

Let's all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others... You're Not Alone.

If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:
