Disney+ in talks to bring back hit show for a second series despite critics calling it a flop

DISNEY+ has been considering reviving its reboot of The Full Monty for a second series despite the pounding from critics and viewers, I can reveal.

Fans of the original 1997 film were thrilled when it came back as a series this year, but many felt it fell short of the much-loved British flick.

An insider revealed the streamer still thinks the story has legs, so is contemplating how to tweak the format for a return outing.

A source said: “It looks like Disney+ are considering the go-ahead on a second series of The Full Monty.

"Talks are ongoing about whether it will make it, but everyone felt there was so much promise behind revisiting the story and a few tweaks could make a second series land better.

“Discussions are under way, with some influential people behind the scenes trying their best to make it happen.”

It comes after leading man Robert Carlyle revealed the reboot had been turned down by BBC and Channel 4 before Disney+ then snapped up the story.

The reunion saw the comedy drama’s original cast, including Mark Addy and Lesley Sharp, navigating the changing times in their Sheffield suburb.

On paper it was much like the movie.

But this time, the group of steelworkers-turned- strippers mostly kept their clothes on as they tackled the political issues of a crumbling healthcare system, education, unemployment and crime.

The new format also introduced a new narrator into the action.

It all left fans disappointed, and critics slammed it as boring and badly written.

My source added: “The ratings, and the negative comments from its viewers, haven’t put anyone off giving the series another look.”

Disney+ declined to comment.
