Fans likely remember the actor for his role as flannel-wearing sidekick Al Borland on show-within-a-show Tool Time.

Almost three decades since the finale, Richard now looks much different from his time in the sitcom.

Last month, he shared an update wishing his followers a Happy New Year

The snap showed Richard wearing a black top hat with "Happy New Year" on it.

One fan replied: "Happy New Year! Meeting you made my year lol."

Another added: "You brought consistency and good morals into our family room when I was a kid.

"Role model and legend of my youth."

While a third said: "Happy New Year, Richard Karn. I hope uou will have a spectacular new year."

It appears the actor and TV host still has fond memories of his former show.

A recent Instagram snap featured a TV screen showing Home Improvement on Netflix.

Nineties sitcom star, 73, looks like she’s barely aged a day in 25 years since hit sitcom as she opens up on reboot rumours

Even some of the biggest Home Improvement fans may not know that Richard wasn't first choice for Al.

The part originally went to Groundhog Day's Stephen Tobolowksy, aka Ned Ryerson.

But a recast was needed when Stephen had scheduling conflicts before filming.

Richard was a guest star in the first season, but had a main role for the rest of the show.

During the sitcom's run, he guest-starred in other 90s shows such as Boy Meets World and That '70s Show.

In 2013, he reunited with Tim Allen for his later sitcom Last Man Standing.

Richard appeared in two episodes - with in-jokes and nods to the pair's time on Home Improvement.
