Six-time Olympic champion and Team GB legend Sir Chris Hoy reveals shock cancer diagnosis
SIR CHRIS HOY has bravely revealed he's battling with cancer.
The cycling and Team GB Olympic icon shared the heartbreaking news with his 57,000 Instagram followers on Friday night.
The Scot, 47, revealed he'd been diagnosed with the disease last year - despite not showing any symptoms.
He said: " I have a bit of news. Last year I was diagnosed with cancer, which came as a huge shock, having had no symptoms up to that point.
"I'm currently receiving treatment including chemotherapy, which thankfully is going really well.
"I'd like to extend my sincere gratitude to all the medical professionals for their amazing help and care.
"For the sake of my young family, I had hoped to keep this information private but regrettably our hand has been forced.
"Whilst I'm thankful for any support, I'd like to deal with this privately."
Hoy was inundated with messages of support after opening up on his battle with the disease.
One of his followers said: "Very best wishes to Chris Hoy."
Another said: "Horrible news. Sending my best to Chris Hoy."
One remarked: "Get well soon Chris Hoy."
Another chimed in: "Wishing you a speedy recovery, Chris Hoy."
Hoy used his brave and emotional post to send other cancer sufferers a message of support."
He said: "My heart goes out to the many others who are also going through similar challenges right now."
Hoy insists he feels fine at this moment in time and is confident of winning his cancer battle.
He said: "I'm optimistic, positive and surrounded by love for which I'm truly grateful.
"As you might imagine, the last few months have been incredibly difficult.
"However, I currently feel fine - I am continuing to work, ride my bike and live my life as normal.
"It's an exciting year of work ahead, not least with the Paris Olympics in July.
"I can't wait to get stuck in, have fun and share it with you all."
Hoy is regarded by many to be one of Britain's greatest-ever athletes thanks to his incredible hauls at World Championships and Olympic Games.
