My council house is huge but was a mess when we moved in – I did it up myself with DIY & even tiled the floors for cheap

A WOMAN has revealed that when she moved into her council house, it was left in a ‘terrible’ state.

The single mum-of-four, who is from the UK, explained that the decor was so bad it made her ‘cringe’, but she decided to do up the house herself, whilst on a budget.

Posting on social media under the username ‘Meet the HJ Family’, the woman, who has a passion for design, shared a clip online and wrote: “I transformed our council house on a budget.”

She then said: “When we got here, the house was terrible. It wasn’t looked after at all.

“The decor was…thinking about it makes me cringe.

“I’m a single mum, I do have my own business, I’m a fashion designer, but the income is not that great, so we couldn’t really afford to go private renting or anything like that, so I took up a council property.

“When we first moved into the house, all five of us were sleeping in one room, the room that had the carpet in it.

“Gradually over time I’ve been doing it up, I’m still not completely finished yet, I’ve still got the bathroom and upstairs toilet to do.

“It’s been a real struggle to get things done - half of the work I’ve done myself. In fact, the majority of the work I’ve done myself.

“I had someone come in to do the plastering in the dining room because it was so so bad.”

The savvy mum explained that she learnt DIY skills by watching others online and was able to do the majority of work herself.

She added: “Watching other people doing painting and sanding, I ended up doing that myself.

I bought my grandparents' old house and did it up for the first time in 25 years - I used bargain buys from Amazon

"I’ve done the floor tiling myself, I’ve put all the doors up myself, I’ve done the garden myself.

“There’s so many things in this house I’ve done myself.

It may not be up to everyone’s standards, but it’s been hard and I’m proud of myself

“Even the kitchen - it was your old council kitchen, it wasn’t that good, so I ended up getting some cupboard paint and painting it white.

“I’ve still got a lot of work to do but I’m so proud of myself. I haven’t relied on anyone to do this for me, I’ve basically done this myself.

“It may not be up to everyone’s standards, but it’s been hard and I’m proud of myself. It’s coming along beautifully.”

The DIY enthusiast then shared a close-up look inside her council house before she got to work on its renovation.

The property was incredibly run down, with paint peeling off the walls and barely any rooms with carpet laid.

The kitchen, which she described as “a bit small” was also in need of modernising.

Seconds later, the mother then shared a series of pictures of her newly refurbished home.

Not only had the kitchen been given an upgrade, with a lick of white paint and new white flooring, but another room, which was previously an empty shell, has since been turned into a stunning lounge.

With grey decor that cleanfluencer Mrs Hinch would surely approve of, we think the home looks fabulous.

New flooring was laid throughout the home too, as well as a fresh coat of paint given to the walls.

Not only this, but the upstairs toilet has been transformed with stick-on tiles and paint and is looking brilliant.

'You've done an amazing job'

The YouTube clip has clearly impressed many, as it has quickly racked up a whopping 21,000 views.

Social media users were impressed with the home’s overhaul and many took to the comments to express this.

One person said: “I am so inspired and encouraged!!! Well done.”

Another added: “Love the way you transformed the house.”

A third commented: “How inspiring is this video!! You’ve done wonders.

"Such a big house with so much potential and you transformed it, that was some serious elbow grease!! Well done.”

Whilst someone else chimed in: “You've done an amazing job. Looks lovely.”
