Netflix fans left sobbing by ‘epic and emotional’ new film with rave Rotten Tomatoes reviews
NETFLIX fans have been left sobbing by Dan Levy’s “epic and emotional” new drama Good Grief, which has received rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have praised the comedy star’s “cathartic” new film about love, loss and friendship which premieres on January 5, while Netflix fans say they feel completely “wrecked” by the emotional trailer.
Dan, 40, is best known for co-creating the fan-favourite sitcom Schitt’s Creek with his dad Eugene Levy, but has taken a side-step from his usual genre with his latest feature.
Good Grief sees Dan take on the lead role of Marc. He stars alongside The Hobbit’s Luke Evans, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actor Ruth Negga and Tenet actor Himesh Patel.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “Marc (Dan) was content living in the shadow of his larger-than-life husband, Oliver (Luke). But when Oliver unexpectedly dies, Marc’s world shatters, sending him and his two best friends, Sophie (Ruth) and Thomas (Himesh), on a soul-searching trip to Paris that reveals some hard truths they each needed to face.”
Good Grief marks Levy’s debut as a director and feature-film writer.

Ahead of its release on Netflix on Friday (5 Jan), Good Grief has received a series of positive reviews.
The film now boasts an 88% critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes after only eight reviews.
Gushing about the film, Philadelphia Gay News said: “Viewers who cosy up to this sad romance will embrace it like one of the oversized sweaters Levy wears in the film.”
Meanwhile, Variety praised Dan’s efforts and ability to shift genres: “Levy’s fans know the multi-talent can play bitchy and caustic; Good Grief shows he can be vulnerable and wise as well.”
Deadline added that it was an impressive feature film debut for Levy. “It is just promising enough to make us look forward to where Levy goes next. The guy is a quadruple threat and an assured talent,” the outlet said.
Netflix fans are excitedly awaiting the official release of the film, but expect it to be emotional as they were left sobbing from the trailer alone.
“You know something is gonna be great when even the trailer makes you cry,” one Netflix fan said after watching it.
Commenting on how relatable the film is, another viewer said: “Oh my gosh, this trailer wrecked me. I am so thankful we’re getting to see Dan’s talent AND get more content about grief AND friendship... something we all experience and too often stay silent about.”
“This is going to be beautiful, and it showcases that sometimes when grief happens it gives times to make someone go through the emotions but also they aren’t alone and they get people to lean on when they are going through their hardest times,” a third viewer praised.
A fourth viewer said: “He made us all laugh in Schitt’s Creek and now he’s gonna make us all cry in Good Grief. I love Dan Levy so much.”
“Love this cast. And I love the friendship depicted in this trailer. This one’s gonna hit hard!” agreed a fifth.
While a sixth added: “I’m already so emotionally invested just by watching this trailer.”
Good Grief premieres on Netflix on 5 January.
